Description

The Tower is a folly built in the form of a look-out tower, likely dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed from stone rubble with stone dressings, although the lead roofing was removed in the late 1940s. The tower is tall and round, featuring a smaller circular stair turret that rises slightly above it, located to the west. Both the stair turret and the tower are divided into three stages, marked by unmoulded stone strings. The embattled parapet is partly surviving on the stair turret.

The tower has Gothick pointed arched window openings on the south and north sides at each stage. On the south side, the larger opening at the top stage contains transomed timber mullion windows with three segmental arched lights. The middle stage window has been removed, and the bottom opening has been infilled. On the north side, the first and second stage windows are blocked, while the top stage window opening is slightly offset to the right above a blocked ground floor doorway that has a timber lintel and a brick relieving arch.

There is an entrance on the east side featuring a cambered lintel and a plank door, with a pointed arched window opening above it at the third stage, which also has transomed timber mullion windows with three segmental-arched lights. The stair turret includes narrow single light window openings on the south side with segmental arched timber lights on the upper two stages; the bottom stage window is blocked. Additionally, there are pointed arched window openings on the west side, with the two-light transomed mullion windows boarded over.
