Description
Norwood Cottage and Taylors Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now divided into two separate homes, likely built in the early 17th century and extended and altered in the 20th century. The structure is made of rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a tiled roof that has gable ends. It features a rendered stack at the left end with offsets, an axial stack, and another stack at the right end. The building has a three-room cross-passage plan, with the stack positioned against the cross-passage, and the two houses divided along this line. There is a projecting stair turret at the rear of the hall.
The farmhouse is two storeys high with a five-window range, although the windows have been replaced in the 20th century. There is a blocked cross-passage doorway, along with 20th-century single-storey extensions at the left end and in front of Taylors Farmhouse, as well as a two-storey extension at the rear of Norwood Cottage.
Inside, there is a plank and muntin screen between the hall and the inner room, with the muntins featuring hollow moulding on the hall side, similar to the fireplace lintel. The hall ceiling beams have step stops, while the inner room ceiling beam has pyramid stops. The doorway to the stair turret has a chamfered surround with scroll-stopped durns. An old window bench is present in the hall. Diagonal stops on the ceiling beams at the lower end and mortices on the headrail indicate the former position of a screen on the lower side of the cross-passage. The fireplace has a double-handed cloam oven doorway and a chamfered lintel. The roof was replaced in the 20th century.
