Description
West Woodlands is a farmhouse with an attached barn, originally built in the 17th century, with the barn likely dating from the late 18th century. The structure is made of rendered stone and cob, topped with a slate roof featuring gable ends. It has a tall rendered hall stack with a tapered cap, which has been heightened in brick, and another tall rendered stack at the rear that heats the lower end, complete with offsets.
The farmhouse is designed in a three-room and cross-passage plan, with a right-angled rear dairy extension that creates an overall T-shape. The barn is attached at right angles to the front left end of the house. The farmhouse has two storeys and features a four-window range with 20th-century fenestration, including two-light casements. The cross-passage doorway has a six-panelled door, with the upper four panels being glazed, and is enclosed in a 20th-century porch. There is also a single-storey extension at the right end, which was formerly an outbuilding.
The barn includes a two-light window at the front gable end and has opposing single plank doors on each side. The interior has been largely altered in the 20th century, but the core of the 17th-century roof structure remains, featuring five trusses with lap-jointed collars and trenches for two sets of purlins, along with a single heavier truss set lower over the upper end with a lap-jointed collar. There is no evidence of smoke-blackening in the interior.
