Description

Borough Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 15th century to early 16th century. It had a stack and floor added in the hall during the 17th century and was refronted and extended to the rear in the late 19th century. The building features colourwashed render over slatestone rubble and a late 19th century slate roof, which is gabled to the right and hipped to the left. There is a late 19th century brick stack on the left end and a rendered brick stack on the right end, along with a 17th century external lateral stack of rendered stone at the rear.

The farmhouse has a three-unit plan with a central hall, a through passage, and a cross wing to the left, which was extended to an L-plan with a rear left wing in the late 19th century. It is one storey and attic high, with a four-window range. A late 19th century gabled porch is located to the right of centre, featuring bargeboards and a half-glazed door set in a round-arched doorway. To the left of centre, there is a one-light casement set in a blocked through-passage doorway, and late 19th century two-light casements with glazing bars. A 20th century outshut is present to the left, along with late 19th century two-light casements in gabled half dormers with bargeboards. A late 19th century outshut at the rear adjoins the cross wing, which has a late 19th century bay projecting to the rear left.

Inside, there are two late 15th century to early 16th century chamfered round-arched service doorways to the left of the blocked through-passage door, with one door partly blocked by a 17th century winder staircase. The central room features a 17th century open fireplace with a flat stone arch and a late 12th century capital with acanthus-leaf carving supporting one end of the ceiling beam. The late 15th century to early 16th century roof over the hall has three A-frame trusses made of heavy scantling, with butt purlins and a ridge purlin set in a notched and lapped apex. The two trusses at the high end (to the right) are smoke-blackened, and casing at first floor level against the rear wall indicates that the feet of the principal rafters are curved.
