Description
Hurleys is a house with origins dating back to the 16th century, although it has been largely rebuilt in the mid or late 19th century. The structure is made of plastered stone rubble, possibly with cob, and features stone rubble stacks topped with 19th and 20th-century brick, along with a slate roof. The house has a two-room plan and faces southwest, with a central lobby entrance leading to an axial stack that serves the larger room on the right. The left end of the house now includes a garage, and there are service rooms in the rear outshots, with the right one having a stack that backs onto the main block.
The exterior showcases an irregular three-window front with PVC windows that mimic the pattern of 16-pane sashes. To the left, there are 20th-century garage doors, and a nearly central doorway contains a 20th-century door with a contemporary hood. The roof runs continuously with the roofs of the adjoining properties.
Inside, the interior reflects significant 19th and 20th-century modernizations. The right room features a large stone rubble fireplace with a soffit-chamfered oak lintel that has bar-scroll stops, dating from the mid-17th century. The roof is mostly from the 20th century but includes one truss that likely dates back to the 16th or 17th century, possibly a jointed cruck, although the lower parts are obscured. Hurleys is part of an attractive group of listed buildings in the center of Holcombe Rogus village.
