Description
The Old School House, formerly Rayers Primary School, dates to approximately 1840. It is now a two-room house facing north onto Fore Street. The building is constructed of grey chert ashlar with stone rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick, and has a slate roof. Originally, the room on the right (west) may have been open to the roof, as suggested by a large window. The front has an irregular two-window arrangement with 20th-century replacement fixed pane and casement windows, some with glazing bars. A large window, set across the first-floor structure, is positioned slightly right of centre and has a segmental arch above. The smaller ground-floor window to the left also has a segmental arch. A Tudor-arched doorway near the right end contains the original studded plank door with coverstrips. The roof is gable-ended. The interior was not inspected. Rayers Primary School was the smaller of the two 19th-century schools in the village and forms part of an attractive group of listed buildings on Fore Street.
