Description

Hillside is a house dating to the mid-to-late 19th century, with possible earlier origins and a 20th-century extension. It is constructed of plastered stone rubble, possibly with some cob, with stone rubble stacks. One stack has a chimney shaft topped with 20th-century brick, and the roof is slate, likely originally thatched. The house follows an L-shaped plan; the main block fronts onto the street to the south-east, comprising two rooms with a central entrance hall and staircase between them. Each room has a gable-end stack. A 20th-century service block is set at a right angle to the rear of the right-hand room. The front elevation is symmetrical, featuring a three-window arrangement of late 19th and 20th-century replacement casement windows with glazing bars. A central doorway contains a 19th-century part-glazed panelled door sheltered by a contemporary monopitch hood supported by curving struts with ball pendants. The roof is gable-ended. The interior has no exposed carpentry, with joinery detail from the 19th and 20th centuries. Hillside is one of a group of attractive listed buildings in the centre of the village.
