Description

Holcombe Rogus School, formerly known as Webbers Charity School, was built in 1849 with extensions added in 1950 and 1962. The building is constructed from grey-coloured local chert rubble laid in rough courses, with Bathstone detailing and a slate roof. The main block of the school is set back on a terrace above the street and faces south. It contains two main classrooms, with the larger classroom located on the right (east) side and an entrance between them. A single-room crosswing projects forward at right angles from the east end of the main block, overlapping only at the front corner.

The original school is designed in a restrained Tudor style. The main block features a three-window front with large three-light stone mullion-and-transom windows, which are also present in each gable end wall. To the left of center on the front, there is a doorway with a two-centred arch that contains a plank door. The block has a gable end with shaped kneelers and coping, and the left (west) gable is topped with an ashlar gabled bellcote that was restored to working order in 1982. The front gable end of the crosswing has diagonal buttresses and a three-light stone-mullioned window, above which is a carved stone scroll that reads "Holcombe Rogus Charity School, 1849." This gable also features shaped kneelers and coping.

The interior was not inspected, but it appears that the original 19th-century structure remains, albeit superficially modernized in the 20th century. This school, endowed by Mrs. Webber of Bampton in 1823, is an important component of the village's architectural heritage.
