Description
A late 18th-century shop with living accommodation above, located on the south side of High Street, Crediton. The building was altered in the late 19th century, with a further shop front modification in the 20th century. The front is plastered, with a slate roof and brick chimney stacks on the front and right-hand side.
The building's plan features two rooms, extending to a double depth.
The exterior is two storeys high, with a roof featuring deep eaves supported by paired, moulded brackets. The original first floor retains two 16-pane sash windows. The shop front has been altered, although the original fascia with cornice remains. The original doorcase is centrally located, featuring a pilaster with incised fretwork and an entablature, though the door is now a 20th-century replacement. A pair of 9/9 pane windows with a central moulded mullion are located to the right of the shop front, likely dating to the 20th century. A 20th-century plate glass window serves as an office entrance, and a further C20 doorway is situated to the extreme left, replacing what was formerly a doorway to the accommodation.
The ground floor on the right has been inspected and altered for shop use, and any original features may remain on the first floors. Deeds suggest a build date of 1780.
