Description

A pair of houses, now divided into three cottages, dating from the early 18th century. The exterior is roughcast with a pantile roof, and features stacks with large, handmade brick shafts. The building follows a U-shaped plan, consisting of a single-depth range, four rooms wide, with a cart entrance at the right end of number 58. The front facade has a 1:2:2 window arrangement, with number 57 on the left. Number 57 has steps leading to a 19th-century four-panel door on the right. It also contains one 16-pane sash window on the first floor and a similar sash window, possibly slightly later, on the ground floor to the left. Number 58 features a cart entrance to the right with 20th-century plank doors, a house door alongside with an overlight, and a 20th-century door. It has one ground floor and two first floor windows with late 19th-century 2-pane sashes with horns and margin panes. Number 59 has a 20th-century boarded door in the centre, and two ground floor and two first floor late 19th-century horned sashes with margin panes. Rear wings extend from the two houses on the right, creating a courtyard behind the main range. The courtyard is paved with pitched stone and granite slabs designed to accommodate cart wheels for the wheelwright’s workshop located at the rear. Inside number 57, there is a fireplace on the right side of the front room, a small service room to the rear, and a boxed staircase alongside the left-end wall. Number 58 is said to contain a crossbeam and a timber lintel over the ground floor fireplace. Number 58 was not inspected, but may contain the original staircase and other features of interest.
