Description

Two houses, located on the north side of High Street, Crediton. They likely date to the early 18th century or earlier, although the front elevation was refaced in the early 19th century. The houses are constructed of cob, with the front of the building stuccoed. The front has an asbestos slate roof with a partially thatched rear pitch. Brick chimney shafts are located at the ends of the building. The asymmetrical front elevation features 3 bays on one side and 2 bays on the other. Number 60 has an early 19th-century recessed six-panel front door with glazed upper panels and panelled reveals. It also has three first-floor and two ground-floor windows, all with early 19th-century 12-pane sashes. A later 20th-century door replaces an earlier doorway to the right of number 60, alongside a ground-floor and a first-floor window both featuring 12-pane sashes. Number 61 has one ground-floor and one first-floor window with an early 19th-century 12-pane sash. The interior was not inspected, but may contain features of interest. The use of cob and thatch suggests the building may predate the 1743 fire of Crediton.
