Description
The forecourt walls, gate piers, and gateway to the Congregational Chapel and Manse in Crediton were built in 1865. The structure features a combination of Flemish bond brick and rendered surfaces, with granite gate piers and an iron gate. The wall that separates the courtyard from the street includes a large gateway leading to the chapel on the right and a smaller gateway to the manse on the left. The granite gate piers at both entrances have rusticated dressing and low pyramidal tops. The chapel's gateway is particularly notable, featuring a pair of gates with an overthrow. Wrought iron panels on either side of the gates are adorned with curved braces and lozenges, and these panels continue into the overthrow with slightly different decoration. Each gate has a top rail that ramps down to the center, with scrolled ends on the main standards. There are curved braces between the top and middle rails, and verticals topped with elaborate finials, each featuring a spearhead flanked by scrolls. This structure is included for its group value.
