Description
Greenslinch Farmhouse is a 15th or 16th century farmhouse, significantly altered over time. The building is constructed of a mixture of cob and stone, and has been rendered. It features a gabled slate roof. The main range of the farmhouse is likely the surviving cross-wing of what was originally a three-room, cross-passage plan; the remaining portion of the original cross-passage now forms a rear wing. Internal end stacks provide heating. The farmhouse is two storeys high. The front elevation has a three-window range, with 19th century casement windows. All other windows are 20th century metal frames. Inside the right-hand room of the main range, there is evidence of a lower end wing, including three cross beams, chamfered with hollow step stopped run-out stops. A blocked fireplace reveals traces of a former bake oven and smoking chamber alongside. The rear wing contains a single room, possibly the former hall, which displays a visible upper or jointed cruck, along with chamfered arched braces and a pair of threaded purlins. Access to the upper floor of this room is provided by an ancient newel staircase constructed of oak, with most of the risers, treads, and string believed to be original, dating from the 16th century. A blocked door in the end wall of this wing indicates that it once extended further. The roof space has not been inspected.
