Description

Old Chimes is a detached house located at No. 14 Gravel Walk in Cullompton. It dates from the mid-19th century and may have been a remodelling of an earlier structure. The house is constructed of plastered cob with stone footings and features a gabled-end slate roof. It originally had a three-room cross-passage plan, with later wings added to the front and rear, making it one room deep with two storeys.

The front of the house, facing the garden, has a symmetrical arrangement of three windows. The first floor features 16- and 12-pane hornless sash windows, with another 16-pane window to the left of the porch, which is latticed and covered by a tented lead roof. The right-hand window has been replaced by a 20th-century unbarred casement. The wing on this side also has a 16-pane hornless sash window.

At the rear, which faces Gravel Walk, there is a central early 20th-century wing with two-light casement windows. There is an open timber porch on this wing and another porch on the main range under a lean-to roof. The house has a right-hand end stack and an axial stack, both with brick shafts.

The interior does not display any early features, and the roof appears to be a 19th-century A-profile. Old Chimes is included for its group value, as it is situated on an important site southeast of the parish church.
