Description
Church Cottage is a house that is part of a row located to the south of the parish church in Cullompton. It dates back to the 17th century but has been significantly remodeled in the 19th century. The building is constructed of cob with a stone plinth and is plastered, topped with a gabled-end slate roof that is half-hipped at the right-hand end. Originally, it likely had a three-room, cross-passage layout and is two storeys high.
The front of the house, which faces away from the church, features a four-window range. The two upper windows on the left have lintels at eaves level, while the others are slightly lower. All the windows are 19th-century two-light casements with transoms, consisting of three panes per light with margin panes. On the ground floor, there are three two-light windows, with the glazing bars removed except for the margin panes; the left-hand window has been modified to serve as a French window. The doorway has fielded panel reveals and soffit, and it is set under a latticed porch with a canopy. There is a 20th-century door and an extension on the extreme right-hand side.
At the rear, which faces Gravel Walk, there are three sash windows on the first floor. Two of these are eight-pane windows without horns and still retain some crown glass, while the third is a four-paned horned sash. The ground floor features another horned sash window, along with two 20th-century windows and two doorways.
Inside the cottage, two 17th-century beams remain, one of which is simply chamfered, and the other is plastered with cyma recta moulding.
