Description

Newburys Farmhouse is a small farmhouse that was originally two cottages, dating from the early 17th century. It is built of plastered cob on rubble footings, with stone rubble or cob stacks topped with 20th-century brick, and features a thatched roof. The house has a two-room plan and faces south, formed from a former pair of one-room plan cottages with end stacks and a secondary rear outshot. It is two storeys high and has a symmetrical two-window front with late 19th-century casements that include glazing bars. The first floor has small two-light windows, while the ground floor features a four-light window to the left and a three-light window of the same size to the right. A large central porch with a corrugated iron roof protects a 19th-century door located to the right of centre, along with a window that blocks a doorway to the left of centre. The roof is hipped on the left side and gable-ended on the right, with the roof extending down over the outshot at the rear.

Inside, the rooms are divided by a cob crosswall, and each room has a crossbeam with broad soffit corners and late step stops. The fireplaces are blocked, and although the roof is inaccessible, the high ceilings on the first floor suggest that the roof may have been raised in the 18th or 19th century. It is notable that one-room plan cottages from before the mid-17th century are rare to find.
