Description
This is a former farmhouse, now divided into two cottages, dating from the early 17th century, with possible earlier origins. The building is constructed of plastered cob on a rubble plinth, with stone and brick stacks and a thatched roof. Originally it had a traditional three-room and through-passage plan, with an inner room to the right, which now constitutes Deer's Leap Cottage. The roof is hipped to the right and half-hipped to the left. The cottage is now two storeys throughout, with a three-window front. A large, plastered volcanic stone stack projects from the hall front (north-west). Later 19th-century stacks are visible on the rear wall, serving the outer rooms. A door, originally part of the passage, is located to the left of the stack. The windows are a mix of 19th and 20th century iron and wooden casements. The service room at the lower end retains a 17th-century axial beam supported by a carved post on the end wall. An oak post-and-panel screen is present on the lower passage side. The large 17th-century hall fireplace is constructed of volcanic stone with an oak lintel, which is chamfered with scroll stops. A 17th-century oak window with two lights and chamfered mullions is set into the rear hall wall. Original framing is exposed on the first floor.
