Description
Farmhouse. It likely dates to the late 16th and early 17th centuries, and underwent significant refurbishment and enlargement in the mid-19th century. The main structure is built with plastered cob on exposed rubble footings, with stone rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick, and a slate roof. Originally a 3-room-and-through-passage plan with an inner room at the north-eastern end, it was altered in the 19th century. It has end, axial and lateral stacks. Mid-19th century service blocks project at right angles from each end, with a 20th-century extension on the left. The rear block at the service end has an end stack. The south-east facing front has a regular, but not symmetrical, 4-window arrangement of 19th-century sashes. A 20-pane (8/12) sash is positioned on the first floor, left of centre and over the door. The remaining windows are 25-pane (10/15) sashes, with late 19th to early 20th-century external plank shutters. The doorway is now behind a contemporary gabled, slate-roofed porch with a 20th-century door. The low-pitched roof is hipped at each end. The projecting sections contain casements, some with glazing bars. Both rear blocks have gable ends. Internally, the majority of the joinery and plasterwork are from the 19th century, although earlier features survive in the main house. The service end room retains a late 16th to early 17th century hollow chamfered and ovolo moulded crossbeam with no stops, and a contemporary stone fireplace with a soffit-chamfered, step-stopped lintel. The hall's 17th-century rubble fireplace has a cambered, soffit-chamfered oak lintel resting on oak pads. Other early features are likely concealed behind later plaster. The roof structure comprises 19th-century king post trusses.
