Description
Road Down Farmhouse is a late 17th century farmhouse that was originally two cottages. It is constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with a stone rubble or cob stack topped with 20th century brick, and features an interlocking red tile roof that was formerly thatched. The building was originally a pair of one-room plan cottages facing south, separated by an axial stack that served back-to-back fireplaces. There is a small 19th century store on the right (east) end.
The farmhouse has two storeys and was originally symmetrical with a two-window front and doorways at each end. Currently, there is a 19th century plank door behind a 20th century monopitch porch with a corrugated asbestos roof at the left end, while the right end door is now blocked by a 20th century casement window with glazing bars. The other windows are oak-framed casements with glazing bars, which may be original. The ground floor windows feature internal iron glazing bars of circular section. The roof is gable-ended with deep eaves supported by a series of timber brackets, and the rear wall is blind.
On the right end, there is a small agricultural store with a cob rear wall, a framed front, and a lean-to roof. Inside, both rooms have original crossbeams that are soffit-chamfered with straight cut stops, and the original fireplaces are blocked. The roof has not been inspected, but its low pitch suggests that it was likely replaced in the 19th century.
