Description
Hittisleigh Barton Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the 16th century, with significant alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of rendered cob or rubble and features cob or rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick, all under a slate roof. It is a long, gable-ended structure facing south, designed with a three-room-and-through-passage layout. The inner room is located at the west (left) end, and there is a granary or storage area added to the service room. The farmhouse has end stacks for the service and inner rooms, along with an axial hall stack that backs onto the presumed passage.
The front of the house has four windows, all of which are 20th-century PVC casements, including two bay windows at the left end. There is a roughly central front door that is sheltered by a late 19th-century glass-sided porch with glazing bars. To the right, there is a secondary door leading to the presumed service room, which also has a 20th-century glass-sided porch. At the right end, a flight of granite steps leads to the granary door, and there is an additional door at the foot of the stairs that opens into a ground floor store. The roof at the left end, which covers the presumed hall and inner room, has a high pitch. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported that oak ceiling beams, blocked fireplaces, and oak roof trusses are still present. This site is historically significant as it was the location of the Domesday Manor of Hitenesleia.
