Description
This is a 17th-century cottage located in Hittisleigh. It’s constructed with plastered cob on rubble footings, with cob and rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick and a thatched roof. Originally a two-room cottage with a central cross passage and end stacks, it now presents a balanced four-window facade facing south-east. A 20th-century gabled porch with a thatched roof is situated on rustic timber posts to the left of the centre entrance. Most windows are 19th and 20th-century casements with glazing bars; however, a small 2-light window on the first floor to the right retains its original oak frame, chamfered mullion, and small rectangular panes of leaded glass. The roof is hipped to the left and gable-ended to the right. The right-hand room contains a chamfered crossbeam with scroll stops and a cob fireplace with a lintel made from the same material. A 19th-century brick oven was inserted into the fireplace. The carpentry in the left-hand room is simpler, suggesting it was added to the original one-room cottage in the 18th century. The two halves of the cottage are divided by a cob crosswall. A cruck roof truss is reportedly located over the right-hand room, though the roof has not been inspected.
