Description
Lewis Cottage is a mid-17th century cottage constructed from plastered cob on rubble footings, with stone rubble stacks topped with 20th-century brick and a felt roof that was originally thatched. The cottage was originally designed as a one-room house with an entrance lobby, facing southeast, and features a rear lateral stack for the larger room on the right (northeastern side). The entrance is now through a 20th-century porch on the right end, and the entrance lobby has an inserted 20th-century end stack. The building has two storeys and a two-window front featuring 20th-century casements with glazing bars. A ground floor window now blocks the original front doorway. The roof is half-hipped at both ends, and the 20th-century porch includes a round-headed window in the gable end with an unusual pattern of glazing bars. Inside, the main room has a 17th-century axial beam that is soffit-chamfered with scroll stops, and the oak lintel of the rubble fireplace has the same finish. There are original winder stairs to the left of the fireplace, though the roof has not been inspected.
