Description
The gates and standards at the southeast entrance to the churchyard of St Michael's Church were built in the late 19th century and are made of cast and wrought iron. The design features a carriage gate flanked by a pedestrian gate. The plain cylindrical standards are inscribed with 'C Davey and Sons Bampton' and topped with finials. The gates have a curved top rail leading to a low center, with trefoil bracing on the main gate's verticals arranged in three rows—double in the center and tripled at the bottom. These gates, likely intended to keep livestock out of the churchyard, are in excellent condition. Unlike the gates on Station Road and Newton Square, the pedestrian gate enclosure is formed by adjacent walls rather than railings.
