Description

Hillside, Orchard Cottage, and the adjoining outbuilding are two connected houses and an outbuilding located on Bullen Street in Thorverton. They date from the 18th century or earlier and feature colourwashed rendered cob construction. The roof of Hillside is thatched, while Orchard Cottage has a tiled roof and is gabled at the right end, which continues to the adjoining outbuilding. The buildings have one stack at the rear of the ridge and two lateral stacks, one made of brick and the other with a rendered shaft.

The structure is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front that has two windows on one side and two on the other, with front doors positioned to the right of each house. The windows are 2 and 3-light casements with square leaded panes, likely from the 18th century, except for the ones beside the front door of Hillside, which are 20th-century replacements. The single-storey outbuilding at the right end is partly weatherboarded and features a plank door on the left, probably dating from the 18th century. The thatch of Hillside extends over a cart entrance between this range and the adjacent property at No. 3 Bullen Street. The interior was not inspected during the survey, so details about it are unclear.
