Description

The chest tomb of John Godfrey is located approximately 12 metres west of the tower of the Church of St Cyriac and St Julitta in Newton St Cyres. It was built for John Godfrey of Crediton, who died in 1779. The tomb is made of purple-grey slate and features a simple classical design. The lid has moulded edges and is inscribed. The long side-walls have engaged balusters near each corner and a central rectangular plaque, while the short side-walls have central, bowed projections. The lid commemorates John Godfrey, aged 84 at his death, his wife Jane, who also died in 1779, and their son and daughter buried nearby. Additionally, the side plaques honor two grand-daughters and a great grand-daughter.
