Description

The Preaching Cross, located 7 metres south of the Parish Church in Silverton, dates back to the 15th century. It is made of volcanic trap and features a plinth with a hollow chamfer, along with two tall octagonal steps above it. The cross has a square socket stone that is shouldered, with a quatrefoil design on each face. The shaft is square and remains in a canopied niche on the west side, although the upper part of the shaft and the lantern head are missing. This structure was described by Masson-Philips in the Transactions of the Devonshire Association in 1938.
