Description

Two dwellings, 6 and 8 Church Road, were originally a farmhouse known as 'The Berry'. The building dates back to the 17th century, possibly earlier, and has undergone significant alterations. It is constructed primarily of cob with stone footings, incorporating brick, notably in the left hand gable end, with all surfaces plastered. The roof is covered with slate and features gabled ends. Originally designed with a three-room, through-passage plan, the lower end is situated to the left of the passage, accompanied by a rear parlour wing. There are front lateral external stacks, one set-off heating the lower end, a rear external lateral stack with two set-offs heating the hall, and an end stack to the parlour wing; all have brick shafts.

The front elevation has a four-window range. The upper floor features three-light 19th-century casement windows, while the ground floor has a mix of 19th and 20th-century two-light casement windows. The leftmost window bay is slightly recessed. A porch with Doric columns and pilasters fronts the doorway to No. 6 (leading to the passage), featuring plain reveals and a panelled door. No. 8 has a glazed timber porch. The left-hand end has two 20th-century two-light windows. The rear elevation includes a newel stair turret with a single-light window, and a wing with three 3-light 19th-century casement windows, arranged as one over two panes.

Inside, the hall retains a shallow chamfered beam. The parlour features one full cross beam and two half-beams with run-out stops. The rear wing’s fireplace shows evidence of a former oven and smoking chamber, along with an axial beam and run-out stops. The roof space was inaccessible but may contain older timbers.
