Description
This building is a store, which was formerly a cottage, located approximately 3 meters west of Elley Farmhouse. It dates from the mid-16th century, with some rebuilding done in the 20th century. The structure is made of plastered cob on rubble footings, with parts rebuilt using 20th-century brick and concrete block, and it has a corrugated iron roof that was originally thatch.
The building has a one-room plan and faces east, standing two stories tall with a one-window front. The ground floor features a 20th-century window and doorway to the left, while the first floor retains the remains of a mid-16th-century oak two-light window, although the mullion and arched heads have been removed. The roof is gable-ended, with the right (north) end rebuilt using 20th-century concrete block.
Inside, there are mid-16th-century features, including a crossbeam that is soffit-chamfered with step stops. This crossbeam is supported at each end by jowl-headed posts that are partly buried in the side walls. The posts of the jointed side-pegged cruck roof truss are tenoned into the top of the crossbeam, and the ridge is supported by a vertical oak post in the surviving left cob gable wall.
