Description
Waterleat House is a farmhouse that likely dates from the 18th century and was renovated in 1937. It is constructed from plastered cob on rubble footings, with stone rubble or cob stacks topped with 19th and 20th-century brick, and has a thatched roof. The building is L-shaped, with the main block facing southeast and featuring a three-room-and-through-passage plan, where the passage is located to the right of center. The right room has an end stack, while the center room has an outer axial stack. There is a service wing at right angles to the rear of the left room, which includes a kitchen with an inner lateral stack, along with agricultural outbuildings that have been converted into domestic rooms.
The house has two storeys and a four-window front that features 1937 casements with glazing bars, including a symmetrical three-window arrangement around a door to the right of center. The roof is hipped at both ends, and a plaque on the left end wall near the front corner commemorates the renovation of 1937. The rear block has 20th-century casements throughout, and the kitchen stack appears to have been rebuilt during the renovation. The interior primarily showcases plaster and joinery from the 19th century and the 1937 renovations, but the layout suggests that an earlier house existed. All fireplaces are blocked, and the only exposed beam is an 18th-century plain chamfered crossbeam located in the center room of the front block, with other early features likely hidden from view.
