Description
This cottage, located 100 meters east of Rock House, is a derelict structure that was likely once the gardener's dwelling. It dates from around 1814 and is probably the work of John Rennie, the engineer of the Grand Western Canal. The building is constructed of coursed rubble and features a pantiled gabled end roof. The gable walls have heavy coping and are designed to resemble pediments. The cottage has a two-room plan with a central entrance and a later lean-to outshut on the right side. It stands two stories tall and has a symmetrical front with a two-window range, although the first-floor windows are missing. The right-hand lean-to has a two-light barred casement window, while the central entrance consists of a planked door with a rectangular fanlight above it. The left-hand end of the cottage has tiny windows, and rusticated quoins add to its architectural detail.
