Description
Overock is a detached cottage built around 1814, possibly designed by John Rennie, the engineer of the Grand Western Canal. The cottage is constructed from random rubble sandstone and features a gabled end roof covered with pantiles. It has end stacks with short brick shafts that rise from heavily coped end gables. The building has a two-room central entrance plan with service rooms in a rear integral outshut and stands two storeys tall.
The front of the cottage is symmetrical with a three-window range, showcasing a moulded stone cornice and rusticated quoins. It has round-headed windows on both floors, framed by rusticated architraves. The upper floor windows have six panes per casement with a semi-circular light above, while the lower floor windows have three panes per casement. A string course drops down to incorporate the sills of the first-floor windows. An open timber porch with slate roofs and crested ridge tiles appears to be a later addition. The cornice continues as a string course along the bottom of the end elevation gable walls, which each feature one two-light round-headed window, with the apex blocked. At the rear, there is a lean-to outshut with a prominent plastered stack facing the roadside. Turnpike Cottage is part of a group that includes Rock House and its rear outbuildings.
