Description
This barn, located 23 metres south-south-west of Halberton Court and adjoining No. 6 Pond Hill, dates back to the 17th century and has undergone some alterations over time. It features a random rubble plinth with cob above and some plaster, all under a corrugated-iron roof that is half-hipped to the north. There is some surviving thatch beneath the current roofing material. The barn appears to have been built in two phases, indicated by a noticeable change in the height of the rubble plinth.
On the front side, which faces away from the church, there is a 17th-century four-light window with ovolo moulded mullions and a double-ovolo surround, along with a later three-light window featuring chamfered mullions and surround on the first floor. The ground floor has four windows of three, four, and six lights, all with chamfered surrounds, and there is a blocked door. The rear side, which faces the church, has two three-light windows on the first floor and two four-light windows below, all with chamfered mullions and surrounds. The ground floor windows are deeper and possibly older, likely dating from the 17th century.
The right-hand end of the barn is primarily constructed of brick and includes a 20th-century vehicular entrance. Inside, there are remnants of one cob cross-wall and seven principal trusses, two of which are from the 19th century, while the others, featuring collars and a pegged apex that is crossed and halved, are likely from the 17th century. The barn holds an important position directly east of the parish church.
