Description
This gatehouse, located approximately 30 metres south of Dowrich House, dates from the early 16th century and was remodeled in the early 19th century. It is constructed of volcanic rubble with volcanic ashlar dressings. The building has a square plan featuring decorative corner turrets and a central carriageway flanked by small rooms. There are stone steps leading to a raised pavement at the front.
The symmetrical southeast-facing front has two windows, small flanking turrets, and a central elliptical arch with a moulded surround. This arch is accompanied by flanking arched doorways and small outer square-headed windows, all with moulded surrounds that contain stanchions and saddle bars. An embattled parapet descends to a lower level over the carriageway. The front also features a raised pavement and a flight of semi-circular steps made of volcanic ashlar, some of which have moulded bull noses.
The rear elevation is similar, with chamfered surrounds to the carriageway and windows. The rubble garden walls to the northeast and southwest are included for their group value.
