Description
Venny Cleave is a house, originally a small farmhouse, dating from the 17th century and remodelled in the late 19th century. It is constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with cob stacks topped with brick, and has an asbestos-tile roof that was formerly thatch. This long, two-storey building is terraced onto a hillside at the rear and faces southeast. It features a three-room plan, which may have been modernised from a two- or three-room and through-passage layout. The roof slopes down to the right and has gables at each end. A large stack projects from the left gable, with a lateral stack located to the right of centre. The main entrance is now on the left side, and there is one window in each room, fitted with 20th-century casements. The section under the lower roof to the right is from the 17th century and includes scroll-stopped beams, while the higher section appears to have been raised and remodelled in the 19th century.
