Description

Widden Cottage is a Grade II listed building that was formerly two cottages, dating from the mid to late 17th century, with some modernizations made in the 20th century. The structure is made of plastered cob with inserted 20th-century brick footings and cob stacks topped with 20th-century brick. It has a corrugated asbestos roof. The cottage consists of two identical attached cottages, each two storeys high with a one-room plan. Both cottages face southeast away from the road, with front doors located to the left. The stacks are positioned in the right-hand gables, and there are now disused stairwells alongside the rear. Each room has a single front window, and the door of the right cottage has been replaced by a window. All casements were replaced in 1984. There is a 19th-century 'West of England' insurance plaque located at the rear center under the eaves.

Inside, the cottage features chamfered beams with scroll stops and original roof purlins between the cob gable walls, although the fireplaces have been blocked. A third cottage to the left was demolished in the early 20th century, and the party wall was partly rebuilt. These cottages are believed to have been miners' cottages, but they predate the nearby lead and manganese works. Widden Cottage is a rare surviving example of 17th-century single-room cottages. It is incorrectly spelled 'Whidden' on some maps.
