Description
Friars Lodge is a large house, built around the 1830s, which has been divided into flats. The building features mass wall construction, is stuccoed and painted, and has a slate roof with rendered chimney stacks that have bands. The plan consists of a large rectangular block with the entrance on the west side, leading to a staircase and a service block at the rear.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical three-bay front. The front door is located to the left and is framed by a deep moulded cornice and an eavesband below the parapet. There are steps leading up to a pilastered doorcase that has an entablature and cornice, with panelled reveals around the door. The windows are fitted with moulded architraves and 12-pane hornless sashes, with two windows on the ground floor and three on the first floor, although the centre window on the first floor is blocked. The right side of the building retains two similar windows on both the first and ground floors, along with two small 20th-century windows. The end of the service block on the right has no parapet and features a hipped slate roof with 12-pane hornless sashes.
The interior has been partially inspected and includes an original staircase with stick balusters and a mahogany handrail. Ground floor shutters are still present, and there may be additional interesting features. The building has group value within an area that contains a mix of high-quality and modest housing from the first half of the 19th century.
