Description

38 Holloway Street is an early 16th-century building that was refaced in the 19th century. It stands three storeys tall and is finished in stucco. The 19th-century sash windows on the left side are positioned correctly, while those in the centre are dropped, and the right side features only one small window. The building has a band and a parapet. There is a 19th-century shop on the left side of the ground floor. The rear is constructed of sandstone and features a gable, with two sashes on the first floor and one above, while the openings below are plain. The left flank wall, exposed due to the demolition of an adjacent property, reveals a blocked arched doorway on the first floor, along with another blocked opening that has a cambered oak head. The parapet is cemented and includes a band. Although the roof is not visible from the street, the interior boasts a remarkable original timbered ceiling on the ground floor, consisting of four bays by three, divided by very heavy moulded beams into squares. The joints in these squares are deeply moulded and chamfered, with each panel of joists arranged at right angles to those in the adjoining panels. On the ground floor of the rear elevation, there are remains of a large stone window and another window. This building was formerly part of Larksbeare House.
