Description

This is a pair of houses with shops at ground floor level, built around 1800, with shopfront alterations dating to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The houses are constructed with mass walls. Number 1 is painted stucco, while number 2 is painted stucco with lining and blocked-out details; the right return is roughcast, and the left return is a mix of red brick and roughcast. Number 1 has an asbestos slate roof, and number 2 has coated, corrugated iron sheets. Cast iron rainwater goods are present.

The houses are a mirror-plan pair, each being three storeys high with boxed eaves and an eaves cornice. A platband runs between the first and second floors. Number 1 has a 20th-century shop front with plate glass windows. The entrance door is to the right, with a glazed lower panel and a rectangular overlight featuring extended teardrop glazing bars. The first floor has two 16-pane hornless sash windows, and the second floor has a 4-over-8-pane hornless sash window to the left, and a small, one-light secondary casement to the right.

Number 2 has a panelled entrance door on the left, with fielded panels and a rectangular overlight. To the right is a late 19th/early 20th century shop front with plate glass windows canted into a central recessed shop entrance and high transomed glazing bars above. A glazed door has two low panels, and a rectangular overlight. The first floor has a single, boxed hornless sash window with 12 panes; the second floor has a 3/6-pane hornless boxed sash window.

A partial inspection of the interiors revealed two inner entrances behind the main entrance of number 1. The left entrance leads to the shop, and the forward entrance leads to the staircase and rooms above. Number 2 has an inner porch behind the left entrance.
