Description
Woonton Farmhouse and the adjoining outbuildings date from around the 17th century, with the house being rebuilt in the early 18th century. The structure is made of stone rubble with freestone dressings and features a steeply pitched new concrete tile hipped roof. It has two storeys and consists of seven bays. The windows have plain stone architraves, with those on the ground floor featuring keystones; four of these have stone mullions and transoms, while the rest have been replaced with sashes that include glazing bars. There is a doorway to the right of the centre, framed by a moulded stone architrave with a flat head, and it has a modern timber porch. The building is topped with two ashlar ridge chimney stacks that have cornices. A lean-to, dating from the 18th century, is located at the left-hand (west) end. At the rear, there is a wing and additional outbuildings arranged around a courtyard, all constructed from stone rubble with slate roofs and stone doorway architraves. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to contain an open fireplace and an exposed ceiling beam in one room, along with a plain 18th-century staircase. The name "Woonton" appears in records from the 12th century, as noted by W.G. Hoskins in his work on Devon.
