Description
Old Orchard is a house dating from around the 16th century, constructed from stone rubble with stone dressings. It may have originally been a hall house with an inserted floor. The house features a thatched roof with stone coping at the gable ends and stands two storeys high. It has a four-window range, with four-light ovolo moulded stone mullion windows that include hood moulds and leaded panes. There is a doorway on the right side leading to a cross-passage, which has an old plank door at the back. A similar three-light stone mullion window is located on the gable end facing the road. At the rear, there is a half-hipped thatched wing with a five-light chamfered wood mullion window, as well as a semi-circular stair tower enclosed in a later lean-to. The chimney stacks at the ridge and ends have been rebuilt in brick. The house is positioned at right angles to the road.
Inside, the cross-passage features stopped chamfered ceiling beams and open fireplaces with stopped chamfer bressummers. There are two moulded stone chimneypieces from the late 16th century in the first-floor rooms.
