Description

The Le Marchant chest tomb, dated 1822, is located approximately 4 metres south-east of the Rolle Mausoleum in Bicton Park. This chest tomb is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a moulded plinth and lid, with the lid having a very low hipped and ridged top. Each corner of the tomb is adorned with a Doric quarter column. The long sides of the tomb display flat oval fielded panels with bead-moulded surrounds, while the ends have similar upright oval panels. The panels on the long sides are inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case lettering. The south side commemorates the death of Joshua Le Marchant in 1822, and the north side includes inscriptions about some of his relatives.
