Description
The Rolle Obelisk is a Grade II listed structure located in Bicton Park, made of limestone ashlar and surrounded by cast iron railings on a granite kerb. It dates from the 18th century, specifically around 1730 according to W.G. Hoskins. The obelisk is a tall stone needle set on a large square pedestal, featuring a soffit-moulded cap and a moulded plinth. It is enclosed by spear-headed iron railings, which have more ornate clustered-shaft corner posts. The obelisk is uninscribed and appears to have been constructed solely as a landscape feature. Its prominent position enhances the view from the nearby Orangery and Italianate Gardens.
