Description

The Seven Stones is a stone circle with outliers located in Bicton Park. Originally a Bronze Age feature, it was moved here and set up as a garden ornament, likely in the first half of the 19th century. The circle is made of red-brown coloured conglomerate sandstone and consists of eight irregularly-shaped upright stones arranged in a rough circle. There is one additional stone located off-center inside the circle and another close by on the west side. To the south, there are two more recumbent stones. Although there are currently twelve stones, it is believed that they originally formed the Bronze Age Seven Stones Circle, which was situated on nearby Mutters Moor between the Otter Valley and Sidmouth. Some stones appear to have been broken, which explains the difference in the number of stones. The stones now serve as the centerpiece of what is known as The Japanese Garden, though the garden furniture is not included in the listing.
