Description
Bicton Cross is a significant brick cross and route marker located at a crossroads, dated 1743. It features a tall, square-section red brick pier with a Beerstone base and cap, which includes a rectangular plaque on each face. Above the cap is a Beerstone pedestal, also square in section, with a soffit-moulded cap, and on top of this sits a small Latin cross on a plain stepped base. The sides of the pedestal and the plaques are inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, indicating various routes and containing appropriate quotations from prayers.
On the west side, the inscriptions read: Woodbury, Topsham, Exeter, with the quote "Her ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace." The south side lists Bodley, Littleham, Exmouth, with the quote "Make us to go in the paths of thy commandments, for therein is our desire." The east side shows Otterton, Sidmouth, Culliton, and the date 1743, with the quote "O that our ways were made so direct that we might keep thy statutes." Lastly, the north side lists Bicton, Ottery, Honiton, with the quote "O hold up our goings in thy paths that our footsteps slip not." Bicton Cross was likely erected by the Rolles of Bicton House.
