Description

The Marchant chest tomb and its surrounding railings, located about 13 meters north of the church porch on the west side of the path of the Church of All Saints, date from the late 18th century. The chest tomb is made of Portland stone and white marble, featuring a rectangular shape on a deep, moulded plinth with a flat, oversailing lid. It has moulded corner pilasters and similar pilasters at the center of the sides and ends. The white marble inscription panels honor Thomas Marchant, who died in 1768, along with other family members. There is a cartouche with armorial bearings on the west end. The railings are made of cast iron, with diagonally-set square section verticals topped with plain spoke finials. The principal standards are columnar and feature depressed ball finials. This monument is a very complete example and is situated in an outstanding churchyard.
