Description

The Marchant chest tomb and railings, located about 19 meters north of the church porch on the west side of the path, date from the early 19th century. Made of Portland stone, the chest tomb features a coped lid that overhangs, with rounded, bead-moulded corner pilasters set on a bead-moulded plinth resting on two steps. The long sides of the tomb have rectangular inscription panels framed with reeding, while the ends display oval panels. The inscriptions honor Mr. Bold Marchant, who died in 1814, along with his wife and daughters. Surrounding the tomb are original cast iron railings, which have square-section verticals topped with spear finials. The principal standards are columnar and capped with urn finials, and there is a gate at the west end. This monument is very complete and is situated in an outstanding churchyard.
