Description
SY 29 SW SOUTHLEIGH
6/129 Scruel Barton Farmhouse -
- II Farmhouse. C18, maybe earlier. Local stone and flint rubble, maybe with some cob; stone rubble and brick stacks with brick chimneyshafts; thatch roof. Plan: 3-room plan house facing south-south-east, say south and built down a hillslope. Uphill the left (west) end room has a gable-end stack. There maybe a through-passage between this and the central room which has an axial stack backing onto the right room which has an end stack. Since no internal inspection was available at the time of this survey it is not possible to describe the layout and room function in any more detail; nor is it possible to outline the historic development of the house. 2 storeys. Exterior: regular but not symmetrical 4-window front of C19 casements with glazing bars. The front doorway is left of centre and contains a C19 plank door behind a gabled, thatch-roofed porch. The main roof is half-hipped to right and gable-ended to left. The left end includes a possibly C18 window containing rectangular panes of leaded glass. Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of this survey. The house might include carpentry features as old as the C16 or C17 and this should be established before any alterations are undertaken.
