Description

Scruel Barton Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 18th century, possibly earlier. It is constructed of local stone and flint rubble, with some cob, and features stone rubble and brick stacks topped with brick chimney shafts. The roof is thatched. The house has a three-room plan and faces south-south-east, built down a hillslope. The left (west) end room has a gable-end stack, and there may be a through-passage between this room and the central room, which has an axial stack that backs onto the right room with an end stack. Due to the lack of internal inspection at the time of the survey, the specific layout and room functions cannot be detailed, nor can the historic development of the house be outlined.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a regular but not symmetrical four-window front featuring 19th-century casements with glazing bars. The front doorway is located left of centre and contains a 19th-century plank door behind a gabled, thatch-roofed porch. The main roof is half-hipped to the right and gable-ended to the left. The left end of the house includes a window that may date from the 18th century, featuring rectangular panes of leaded glass. The interior was not available for inspection during the survey, but it may contain carpentry features as old as the 16th or 17th century, which should be confirmed before any alterations are made.
