Description

The Sussex Hotel is an early 19th-century building, forming an important group with the Bedford Hotel and the Esplanade. The front of the three-story building is stuccoed and features rusticated quoins and window openings. A stepped frieze, moulded cornice, and blocking course are present. The roof is steeply pitched with slate covering, and it has two dormers with lozenge-shaped ornamentation to their pediments. The second floor has two recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars. Later cantilevered bay windows have been added to the ground and first floors, with marginal glazed lights. A first-floor balcony, supported on brackets, features a trellis balustrade and end supports for a tent-shaped canopy. An entrance is located on the right side of the ground floor, and a small window to the left may have replaced a door, suggesting the house was originally divided.
