Description

Woodhayes is a house dating to the early 19th century, with a possible core from the 18th century. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick, with the front and sides plastered, and has stone rubble or brick stacks with brick chimney shafts and a slate roof. The building has a U-shaped plan, with the main block facing south and containing a two-room plan with a central entrance hall and main staircase, the principal rooms, each with a rear lateral stack. Two-room plan rear service blocks project at right angles to the rear of each end. The larger room in each rear block shares the main block stack. The right (east) rear block currently serves as the kitchen, although the owner believes the left (west) rear block was originally the kitchen. While it appears to have been an 18th-century house refurbished in the early 19th century, conclusive evidence of earlier 18th-century work is lacking.

The house is two storeys high and has a symmetrical five-window front featuring 16-pane sash windows (some replacements with horns), arranged around a central doorway. This doorway is sheltered by a Hamstone porch with a flight of three steps and a pediment supported by Tuscan columns. The doorway has double six-panel doors. The roof is steeply-pitched with sprocketted eaves. Similar sash windows are found to the rear, along with a few 20th-century casements with glazing bars at the back end of each service wing. A service doorway with a fielded two-panel door is located at the back of the right (east) rear wing.

The interior contains original 19th-century joinery, including an open string stick baluster staircase.
