Description
Stonehayes Farmhouse is a 17th-century or earlier farmhouse. The house is whitewashed and rendered, with a thatched roof featuring a plain ridge, hipped ends to the left and right, and axial and end stacks. The layout is an "L" shape. The main range is single-depth, originally having a cross passage near the center, leading to two heated rooms on the right (the partition between them has been removed). To the left of the entrance is a rear axial passage providing access to a rear wing, beyond an unheated room and a heated room at the left end. A straight staircase rises against the rear wall to the right of the entrance, with access from the cross passage. The first floor of the rear wing was formerly used as a cheese loft. It is possible that the left end of a three-room and through-passage house has been rebuilt and enlarged. The front of the house has an approximately symmetrical five-window facade with 2- and 3-light 20th-century timber casement windows with glazing bars. A late 18th or 19th century panelled front door is set within a wide 20th-century open porch on posts. Inside, the right-hand end of the house, likely the original higher-status end, is now a single room with a chamfered crossbeam featuring run-out stops. The fireplace in the axial stack is partially blocked, but may contain an earlier lintel and jambs. An exposed axial beam is present in the left-hand room, and a rough crossbeam in the rear wing. Roof timbers, visible during repairs, were fixed with wooden pegs.
